Save Pleasure Island Disc Golf Course!

Postby J. Ray » Tue Jun 26, 2007 11:59 am

Perhaps you have heard or have seen on the PDGA website the troubling news that the city of Port Arthur, TX has plans to remove the disc golf course on Pleasure Island. This is truly sad news for the world of Disc Golf. Pleasure Island was the site of the 1994 and 1995 Disc Golf World Championships. Barry's Treasure Island is the last remaining course of the four that were constructed for the Championships. It is played by scores of disc golfers on a daily basis and is well managed by an involved, dedicated, and grateful club, the Golden Triangle Disc Golf Club. The club uses the course for league play and hosts annual tournaments there. The members of GTDGC have mobilized a stout resistance to the recent developments and they need our universal support.

Here's a link to an online petition, no need to register, just an easy way to show your support:

You know that course you call your "home course?" It may not be the best course you've ever played. It may not be the course you had your first ace at. But it's the course where you feel you're home. Every shot is made with great delight and anticipation. The course seems more navigatible, as if you know where every line is and where every shot needs to go. Even if you give yourself a tough putt, you're confident you can sink it. Well this is what this course is to me, and alot of other folks.

The course was built atop a motocross course offering hilly terrain, a pleasure folks from this area hardly get to experience. Across the course is the monstrous Pleasure Island ship channel. As golfers tread the course, they are marveled by tugboats and towering barges creeping through the tight channel. Whilst making their way through this championship-caliber course, golfers are ominously surrounded by the ever-present, magnificent Pleasure Island Bridge. This beautiful scenery, this challenging and rewarding course, make this park, which is set to become a 19 acre RV lot housing Motiva laborers, a jewel of southeast Texas.

The Golden Triangle Disc Golf Club is using every available resource to counter the removal of our beloved course. So far the petition has over 1200 signatures. Unbelievable! This movement has attracted local news outlets, brought the case the PDGA, and is gaining national momentum. Please show your support for southeast Texas Disc Golfers, and the sport of Disc Golf.
