dying the back of the disc question

Postby Ode » Mon Mar 09, 2009 9:45 pm

okay, im dying the inside of a disc. ive tried this before and had similar results where the dye doesnt take evenly so it looks splotchy. and of course it takes forever because i cant heat it. i would like to know what others have done to get a better result dying the back.

my 2 plans are to try to use a space blanket to heat the disc/dye to get it to set better. if this doesnt work, ill give in and take it inside and float it in my pot iwth just water and heat it that way, but since i dont have access to a stove at the moment, id like to avoid this. I got someone to print club stickers with the lettering reversed so that i can dye it into the back and it can be read through the flight plate on the clear champion discs that are being run now. ill try to post pics once ive completed a few as well as my dyes over the past year, but i might be too lazy.

thanks all for the help

I use a 2 to 1 ratio of liquid Rit dye (2) to Acetone (1). But I only use a cap for each and a brush for application.

What I do:

1 package of rit + pot/pan + water
Heat water to boiling, add RIT, return to boil, remove from heat
wait until you can hold your hand on the side of the pot/pan, then it's cool enough
spoon some dye into the disc
remove vinyl

I usually have extra dye sitting around so all I need to do is heat it up then let it cool. If you're putting the vinyl down around the middle be sure to press it down super good as the nipple tends to cause problems.

the dye will still take if not hot, you just need to leave it overnight
