Sticker paper and first dye pics

So I took my first shot at dying the other day.

I followed Acid's tutorial step by step and it came out pretty well. I had a couple of bleed spots but that was due to me not being 100% careful. The image itself didn't turn out like I wanted (artistically) but in terms of technique I don't think I did a bad job.

Anyway I stumbled on a short-cut that I'm not sure if I've seen here. My wife had a small suppy of sticker paper. Basically printer paper with a peel-off adhesive backing. I guess she used it for scrap-booking.

I just found the image I wanted on the computer and printed it out.

After covering the disc in contact paper I just stuck the sticker on top of that and cut away. It made transferring the image a lot easier especially since I have very little artistic talent.

alternately, if you have access to a laser printer you can print directly onto laminating sheets and use that as a cutting template.

At 9" (22.8 cm) wide 1 sheet will completely cover the surface of a Gateway Element. Condors and Jaguars are too big for one sheet, though.

Ok I gave it another shot.

1. I just wanted to see if I could follow all of the steps in Acid's tutorial so I kept the image simple. It almost looks like it could have been drawn on with a pen.

2. This was a used candy Tee-Bird with a few blemishes.

3. The letters you see are from the underside where the disc was ID'd.

4. Overall I like how it came out. The cutting was tough and it looks like I did a decent job. The only real flaw is on the nose. I had to put a small dot of contact paper to replicate the shine on the nose and I think it wasn't flat enough.

5. I used sticker paper on top of contact paper.

Next I'm going to try something a little more complex.

I like the glare on the nose, it looks more realistic with that slight fade look

I think it looks pretty solid.

Really, any dye can be drawn on with a sharpie. That's what sharpie is- dye in a solvent. The application process is a whole lot easier than this bizarre method of dip-dyeing that has been chosen.

I think dip-dyeing with vinyl stencils is way more fun than drawing with markers, though.

Do you mean that you put a different "island" of contact paper on for the nose-shine than what was already there? You may have let some of your skin oil touch the adhesive part- lucky it didn't go away entirely!

Do you mean that you put a different "island" of contact paper on for the nose-shine than what was already there? You may have let some of your skin oil touch the adhesive part- lucky it didn't go away entirely!

I started to cut the nose with sort of a smaller oval within a larger circle. But the whole circle came up when I peeled. I had to go back and put the oval back in. Yeah, it probably didn't have as much adhesive.
