I've been experimenting with Mathematica to produce interesting 3d designs, should have a few dyed in a couple weeks.

If you guys using photoshop and such like geographical shaped, I'd recommend any of the following. They all take very simplified (or pretty complex if you really get into them) programming code and generate some quite beautiful shapes and designs.
context free - windows/mac/*nix (probably easiest to use)
processing - windows/mac/*nix/other (java based)
nodebox mac only (python based language, second easiest to use IMO)
