It might be a noob train wreck but I <3 my bag!!!

Postby alvarezj335 » Fri Feb 27, 2009 12:50 pm

Hi, this is my first post. I have been playing for about 8 months (give or take for winter). I am a RHBH thrower, and I can flirt with 300' on a good day. Just looking for suggestions to lighten/ improve my bag! Thanks in advance

if you are only throwing 300 i would say drop the grove. the valk is all the disc you need. you could also drop the wolf and the roc also the rattler unless your in love with it. 6 molds would be good.

Yeah, at 300', that bag is all over the place. The Valk should do all he needs distance-wise, the midranges are fine - no drone, too overstable - and pick a putter. Less clutter the better until you have an idea what you want the discs for. The wraith & destroyer are too fast and overstable at 300', too.

Champion Groove (Blue) 167 (Distance Driver)
Champion Groove(Pink) 171 Dump both the Groves, that's too much disc for your power level.
Champion Valkyrie (Pink)-168 ($$$ Control Driver) AKA Winona
Star Valkyrie (Purple)-168

Dx Archangel (Blue)-150 (Roller/Thumber/ Geese Mover) Since you will outgrow this disc in no time, dump it now and use your Wolf as a roller.

DX Shark (Yellow)-175
DX Wolf (Yellow)-173
DX Cro (Orange)-167
Drone -??? This is too overstable for your arm unless you're playing in 30mph headwinds
Star San Marino Roc-150 The Shark, Cro and 150 Roc all overlap to a degree, I'd stick with the Shark

Banger GT-???
Rattler-170 I'd only keep this if you intend to use it for elevator shots

Other discs I have
DX Destroyer 169 Trade this for a heavy Firebird
DX Wraith 167 Trade this for a TeeBird
DX Valkyrie 167
My trades

I suck at Disc Golf, therefore I can't afford to carry discs that suck.

Get a few Gazelles and make them your primary drivers. Beat one or two in and keep a fresh one in your bag as well. I'd consider changing your putter mold too unless you're really attached to the Banger. Guess I don't really like the Groove Top - just my .02.

Brother,
Listen to the advice of previous posters dump the Groove and all the fast discs. Leopards will teach you a lot as will Gazelles. Until you can get either mold to 300'+ don't throw any other drivers.
Learn a flat release, hyzer flips, anhyzers, all of the hyzer menu etc. and when you can get a Gazelle to do all that then think about other molds. Maybe add a Firebird for big headwinds too.
Go with ONE putter and ONE mid only; learn them and maybe play rounds without any drivers.
So I say with what you own go with Valk, Shark and Banger GT.
But Better go Gazelle and use the DXShark and the Banger GT. But I ended up with Rocs and Wizards..mmmmm

Yeah, Teebird and Gazelle are probably the best discs from Innova, since players of all power ranges use both. You'll see pros throwing Gazelles over 500 ft in beautifully shaped lines, and noobs can get the best drives at only 150 ft. Teebird is a great stable driver, and excellent for learning forehand too, if you haven't already (you definitely should!).

Gazelle/Teebird combo, 150-160g mass range, and a solid putter pretty much covers the gamut. Learn these discs, and then add others sparingly. The Valkyrie is good for S-shots (but doesn't hole a line like the Gazelle) and also shots where you want some fade+skip at the end (Gazelle and Teebird both have minimal skip). For rollers, try a Stratus to begin, then maybe a roadrunner/sidewinder-like disc down the road. Valkyrie is a good forehand roller, IMO.

Innova doesn't make the Gazelle in a durable plastic (you can request they do this on their home page, and/or buy a $20+ Champion Gazelle by Google search...I did both). This is pretty bizarre, considering how great a disc it is, and how popular it is among most players (e.g., see the responses on this board).
Japan bag...

I'm just asking, which can you throw farther? Your groove, or your valkyrie?
I'm guessing that you're going to say groove, and that you throw it on a big anhyzer.
On a straight shot, you or I could get more distance with the valk fa sho.

If you work on building up your throw with stable to understable discs, you'll develop better form and control in the long run.

The kind of stuff that will help you is like the XL, gazelle, comet, valkyrie.

Stuff like rocs, teebirds, orcs, wraiths, surges, are all too stable/overstabe. You won't really be able to work any of these. They'll finish left and that's about it. A nice fresh roc or teebird can help you out for headwind throws, though.

Usually the mark of a good valkyrie is that it's domey. So if all the dx ones you see look kinda flat, just go with star. Those always seem to have a nice dome. Champ valks just generally don't fly that far. I think Blake said they were up to 30% shorter than good dx ones.
