What cameras do you guys recommend for taking drive footage? I'm not looking to break $300 in price, since it's going to be single purpose (just to film my drives). I was looking at digital still cameras that take video, but ALL of those max out at 30fps... is 30fps too slow for a disc golf drive video? Normal video's 60fps...

Anyone got any recommendations? I really would like to go with a digital still cam if possible, for ease of fitting in my bag...if 30fps at 640x480 is decent for this purpose, I've got a ton I can choose from, I just don't want to go spend a bunch of cash and find out it was an utter waste...

If you don't mind using a digital camera to take videos they would recommend the casio pixma 7.0 megapixle. It takes pretty good video andif you can format the videos to play in QuickTime then you can progress frame by frame. I think the camera runs about $190 last time I checked.

I don't know that much about the quality of videos taken on digital still cameras, but I should point out that normal video is 30 fps, not 60.

i like canon's video gear.

if you want to get the most out of your video work try to find one that will do deinterlaced frames.

the Canon IS S1/S2/S3/S5 series are pretty good combo units - 30fps 640x480 with audio as well as a good camera. Because the S5 is new, all the other models should be quite cheap. They haven't changed the video much since the first one, just made it easier to record longer. You can record for about 9 minutes at a time (about 1gb). If you had a 4gb card, you could record 4 1gb movies not 1 4gb movie. That's the limitation.

If you watched the video I made, it was with the S3 camera.

I agree.

I just bought the A590 for like $170. I am very pleased with it.

It is essentially the same as the A570, but a bit cheaper.

Shoots excellent pictures and above average digital video.

I have a Canon SD 800 IS. It shoots great disc golf photos and ok video and is about the size of a pack of smokes. I believe it was in the $300 neighborhood new about a yr ago. I agree with the consensus that Canon has a pretty good line ofg compact digital cameras within different budget constraints. One thing I would make sure and look for on a camera this size is the image stabilizer.

Just saw that the Canon S3 IS is listing at $199, should be closer to $150 retail and it's the kind of camera that can do quite a bit, although it's not the size of a pack of smokes

all my vids are with the cannon sd1000 dig cam. It takes REALLY good photos and pretty good vids. All my vids on youtube have been compressed by me and youtube, and they look much much better before the compression--but they are hundreds of megs.

I've decided to wait on the digital SLR (I want the Rebel XTi), in favor of a camera my wife will not be afraid to use (P&S).

I'm window shopping for the Canon G9 right now too. Considered by many experts to be hands down THE BEST point and shoot camera in the world.

I got a Canon PowerShot A590 from Best Buy for about 150 dollars. A warranty and SD card will push you over the 200 limit. However, the quality for what you want and the price of the camera equals a good deal. Take a look at my throw analysis to see the picture quality. Granted, having downloaded my throw on youtube caused the quality to diminish some but it's still good quality for the buck.

mmm, old thread revival... this summer picked up a canon s5 IS... i did take some 60fps video of myself but saw enough areas for improvement that i didn't bother posting it. i feel better about my throw than i did at the beginning of the summer, so i should take some more before the weather gets too rainy..
