Increasing arm speed

Postby Robin Hood » Mon Jul 26, 2010 5:18 pm

So I'm down here at Worlds and realized after watching thousands of drives that my arm speed is really slow. Is there any way to increase your arm speed or is it just a natural thing? Any type of training I can do? I'm happy with my D right now(~380-400 golf line D) but more never hurt. Any ideas peeps?

Late acceleration may be a better term. Think of it as exerting 80% of your power during the last 20% of your pull.

1 - Make sure you're getting maximum reach back, so that you have the most time to build arm speed.
2 - Make sure you're getting a "pull", your arm is being pulled through by your legs and core.

If you're doing these things...

3 - Go out in a field and try to create the griplock feel, without releasing late.
4 - Tailor a workout routine around building your legs and core to increase strength where it is most needed to rip drives.

Just some thoughts.

efficient transfer of power onto the disc will dominate arm speed.

throwing with equal efficiency, a faster arm speed will throw farther.

99% of disc golfers have power efficiency that ranks from terrible to fair (on a scale of terrible, poor, fair, moderate, good, excellent, superb).

e.g. 75mph of arm speed and a 45mph disc launch velocity sucks.
45mph of arm speed and a 60mph disc launch velocity rocks. (yes, this is possible as most of the speed isn't generated by the velocity of the arm itself).

if you really want to improve your D, i would focus on the efficiency (snap) aspect. 380-400' of golf d power implies you probably have an average launch velocity in the realm of ~45-49mph.

Blake, who would you characterize as having a very high throwing efficiency/smash factor?

One player I think has it is Simon Lizotte
