Personally I'd say it helps the hips turn more than it helps the shoulders. It forces you to turn your hips to get your left leg (for RH) to take the backwards step. Then when your right leg comes forward to plant, it opens the hips back up and starts the 'unraveling' of your torso, shoulders, arm and wrist.
