Maybe you just need some more practice? My distance fluctuates if I haven't played for a while.
In my own experience I've found that overall distance doesn't mean that much. I play a lot with my brother whom I can out-drive considerably most of the time. He however, has an excellent putt and approach game so at the end of the round we're usually tied or very close in score. It all evens out.
That said, a little extra D never hurt! It could mean the difference between a birdie or a par.
Consistent practice (and trying some new plastic) is what improved my distance.
