i noticed that in the videos of the players throws many of them seem to throw off their heel. i always thought it was better to throw off the ball of your feet. which is the best/proper way to throw? does it make a difference if you are on concrete or earth? or depending on the kind of shoes that you are wearing?

that is a good question. there is no inherent benefit from throwing off the heel vs. ball when it comes to power/technique. the ball of the foot is much more knee friendly, but it is easier to get athletic leg drive and plant on the heel.
you'll notice with some of them that they set down on the heel and then roll onto the ball of the foot to pivot, while others will pivot fully on the heel.
i am very uncomfortable planting on the heel mainly because it is VERY easy to slip when tees get wet/dusty. heel pivots also require you to finish every throw well or they will go very awry.
you can always experiment with both and see what works best for you.
