What is a knife hyzer?

Postby Aaron_D » Fri May 05, 2006 11:05 am

I keep seeing people talk about this shot on these forums...what is it?

It's a shot that starts its left turn quicker. Locally, players call shots with extreme hyzer that normally dive hard into the ground knife hyzers.

hrm, my reply must not have gone through last night.

a knife hyzer is a steep angle hyzer, generally released with more than 60 degrees of hyzer angle.

this can be performed with any disc and is of varying trajectories.

it is a fairly direct up and down type shot that flies more like a lawn dart than a glider. the idea is to have the disc "knife" through the air rather than glide at all.

there's a variety of lines that qualify as knife hyzers and range from a wide hyzer pulled out to the right and brought back left, a straight line with little if any left/right play. a low trajectory arcing line drive, a super high parabola, etc.

the real defining characteristics of knife hyzers are:
1) they should not change angle during flight (unless they get more vertical as they are coming down, but flattening out is a definite no no).
2) the disc comes down hard and either digs in to the ground or bounces (and sometimes rolls after the bounce).

There is a new hole placement at a course I frequently play. Basically you ahve nothing but trees to the left of you for about 75-90 feet and there is no way in hell you'll make it thru them. Then there is an opening and all open fields...the basket is only 120 feet away or so, however you need a "knife Hyzer" to even get near it..godo times.

badlands 5? I throw a different shot on that hole just to show off...

I was messing with this one talking to a guy about weird airshots on saturday.
I get to badlands today and think, this is the only place this shot would ever work.
I left myself with a 15' putt.

really it works in a place a short tomohawk would work. Im not the best w/ tomohawks, but the "skamahawk" seems to work when I need a high up down with some travel left.
