The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - 2011 Edition

Good: Finished first in advanced in the local ice bowl. Two rounds of 18 worst drive doubles. Mulligans available for purchase for $5 each. We played completely without mulligans.

Bad: The 6-8" of snow that fell the night before the tourney. And I had to clean off all the teepads before the start of the first round.

Ugly: Two rounds of constant heckling my partner got.

Good: Played an "ice" bowl at Seneca on a gorgeous, 60-degree day. Second round was solid, forehand approaches were working well, and I made an 80-foot putt.

Bad: Threw a perfect drive on one of the easy holes. When the disc failed to fade to the basked, I realized that I had thrown a yellow X Comet instead of a yellow DX Roc. Gawd, I'm an idiot sometimes.

Ugly: The entire first round. OBs, missed short putts, missed fairways, and finished about 10 shots worse than usual.

Good: Found a 8/10 domey Z comet with no name at the course today

bad: Hit chastity belt again on a drive, no ace yet again.

I can verify all of the above.

Frank dove on that disc like it was a grenade. He protected me from falling victim to that errant yellow Comet.

Good: I can now see the base of my basket in my back yard.

Bad: There is still 6-8 inches of snow covering my entire home coarse.

Ugly: The fact I have a tournament 2 weeks from today and haven't thrown a disc since Thanksgiving.

Good: Threw my longest drive ever, 480 feet off the big hill on Rockburn hole 15. Thank you, gravity! My 150 Star Valk turned perfectly and flexed back at just the right moment, sneaking through the trees and landing 35 feet short on a 515' hole.

Bad: Missed the putt

Ugly: Missed the putt low. After the best drive of my life, you would think that I would give the frigging putt a chance.

Good - Got to play in my first sanctioned event of 2011.

Bad - It was in the high 30's with ton's of rain and wind gusts around 30 MPH.

Ugly - 20 ft. birdie putts into headwinds sailing over the basket to leave 35 ft come backs. Going from 2's to 4's

The Good- shot a respectable first two rounds at the memorial, of +1, and even putting me in 11th place going into the final round. Hit zero OBs the first round at Foutain Hills. Also got a practice round in with Avery Jenkins and Nate Doss, as well as one on one putting time with Philo Brathwaite and Dave Feldberg.

The Bad- left plenty of strokes out there both of those rounds. Didn't make a single putt 20'+ away round one including 5-6 within 20. Poor middle section round 2 that brought me back over par on easier holes after being -2.

The Ugly- Hit OB 7-8 times and completely self destructed round 3 pushing me all the way back to 32nd. Couldn't throw a decen shot to save my life through the front 9.

The Good - FINALLY!! got to visit the IDGC in Appling, GA. I was like a kid in a candy store. So giddy walking through the front doors.

The Bad - Only having time to play 2 out of the 3.

The Ugly - Getting a reality check when going from Steady Ed Headrick to WR Jackson...... ouch.

Great: Tied my CR for my home course -12 in leagues
Good: witnessing my buddy hit an ace on the last hole (going from +1 to-1 on the last hole is cool)
Bad: only making 10$ cause the pro pool was so small, and I had to pay an ace.
Ugly: coming out a couple days later and throwing a -3 (and managed to defend my tag anyway)

Ugly: Still working on my pitch putting. The timing/feel takes a lot of practice to get right.

Bad: Have to work this weekend during the beautiful weather (70 and sunny)

Good: The putting is improving a lot and I am rarely ever 3-putting anymore.

Great: JR's commentating on the latest Dutch Open videos (Parts 5-7?). Deadpan and awesome. For example, after one drive catches trees:
"Anders ees da pinball wizard."
Fantastic...don't miss it.

Learned a good lesson today. Was playing 18 and caught up to a group of four doubles (who happened to be the local league) who invited me to play with them.

Good: I parked 15 out of 18 drives from the tee.

Bad: I was nervous playing with new people, even though they were super nice and welcoming.

Ugly: My putts. I'll chock it up to nerves but out of 15 putts for birdie I made one (and even that was before I caught up to the group). Plus I triple putted for bogey and on one hole I hit the same tree twice for bogey. I went from one under to two over when I could have made a dozen easy putts.


I really need to get out of my comfort zone and quit playing by myself. I'm thinking about joining the league.

Putting is everything. At least you know what you need to work on. And yes, playing in leagues and even small tourneys will really help your play.
