Hey Blake.....I want to first say that I was happy to see your article on putting in Disc Golf Magazine.

Besides that, I would like to know "What's in your bag?"

Here is my set up....please feel free to comment if you would like:

174 Champ Firebird - Strong Headwinds, Spike Hyzers.
171 Champ Orc - Windy Conditions & when I need to finish left.
169 Champ Beast - Distance Driver
172 Pro Beast - Slightly Beat, Long Anhyzers or Hyzer Flip
171 Z Tracker - Control Driver. Dead straight. 300'-425'

176 KC Pro Roc - Slight hyzers.
176 Glow Coyote - Just about anything 250'-350'
175 Classic Aviar (big bead) - Beat - Anyhzer upshots
(2) 174 First Run Pro Aviar - Putting (1 extra for practice putting)

sounds like your setup is pretty good and doesn't have a lot of overlap.

as for my bag and the injury i am still recovering from, my bag varies a lot, especially with the new discs out, discs being discontinued, etc.

here are the discs i do not foresee changing in the near future:
174g Z Crush - broken in - hyzers/headwinds/skips/knifes
171g Z Crush 1st Run - newish - same as above but when i want it to go more straight
174g Z Predator - broken in - hyzers/headwinds/skips/trick shots/knifes
171g DX Valkyrie - super beat - rollers/turnovers
169g DX Valkyrie - thrashed - rollers

177g DX Roc - newish - hyzers/headwinds
179g DX Roc - beat - straight/turnover
176g DX Roc - super beat - straight/turnover/finesse
176g DX Roc San Marino - thrashed - turnover/roller
174g S Firm/Med Wizard - broken in - hyzers/straight/anhyzers
170g S Soft Wizard - broken in - finesse/touch approaches
168g S Med Wizard - newish - putts

i realize this doesn't have any of my straight drivers, but those are the ones that i keep tweaking.

now that they aren't making the pro orc in a weight i throw, i'm guessing the orion will probably take over once i can break a few of them in.

I try to keep all my discs around 172 grams. I throw rhbh

1 Avair -putt and approach. Man do I miss my old one (~10 yo). Prolly switching to a wizard next year. Planning on getting a skillshot and 5 putters to start improving that part of my game.
1 - Roc - When the throw simply has to be beeline straight.
1 beat XS - for those throws that have to go right
1 newer XS - for mid distance drives. Very consistent disc.
1 Pro Orc- For longer drives. Getting longer and straighter all the time.
1 Champ Orc - When I want to to throw long. It always hyzers in a bad way and I end up pissed off about it.

On the table at home.

Wraith - I keep trying but I'm just not getting precision or accuracy with this yet. Interestingly I can throw it forehand better than any other disc I have used.
Backup Roc - For when I lose the other one.
150 g Teebird- When I go out to practice I take this to marvel at people that can throw it with any sort of accuracy.

On the agenda -
Starfire - Just want to buy one for my practice sessions. No idea why. Maybe I learn to love it. Noone I know throws it so I have no idea how it throws.

based upon your bag setup, i might recommend the orion ahead of the starfire.

i was a pro orc thrower for distance and i've found the orion's stability to be closer to my liking. orion is basically a flippier starfire.

I've been throwing a heavy Orion recently and I think it's great. Once you figure out the right amount of hyzer to put on it it's incredibly straight with really minimal fade.

buddy of mine lost my seasoned orion, and have been tryin to find the right angle for my newer ones. when i have thrown them well, they tend to finish nearly straight and a flight that deviates less than 5' offline to either side of center.

lot of people seem to struggle with flipping it, but those are the same people that have trouble flipping most discs

Incidently I use a enfamil bag for my bag. Leftover from baby times with my son. It has 2 insulated holders with pull strings that are large enough for nalgene bottles, holds 12 discs, and stands upright. Works great.

I picked up a Starfire and Orion and testing is going on.

My home course is hilly and windy, sometimes you face a headwind on every hole. I throw RHBH and LHBH.

I know I over lap with some of these and most of my stuff is overstable, but I can throw left handed as well so I really don't think I need but a few understable discs. I have many other disc as well and usually rotate them in and out depending on playing conditions.

Experimenting:
Orion, 162 - Quite flippy so far, more so than my proline Beast, but with more glide
Aero, 173 - Looking for a putter with more glide

Out of bag:
Wraith PL, 172 - Not for now - I have only managed to turnover this disc once slightly
Leopard DX, 167 - Extra understable disc
Aviar Classic DX, 171 - Practice putter
Rhyno DX, 175 - Windy conditions


Does anyone have any comments or recommendations? I'm still pretty new to the sport (a few months) and am still learning.

I might suggest getting something more durable for your backhand rollers. IMHO, proline doesn't hold up well enough to rollers, they start to get too inconsistant after continuous use for rolling. DX and champion are great for rolling.

Other than that, you've got a good setup, and you seem to cover a large range of shots with few gaps and very little overlap.

Keep practicing what you've got and most importantly, learn the plastic you're throwing!!!

Pulled the Monster and Beast out of my bag in favor of two lighter weight Champion T-Birds.

Starting to Throw My T-Birds more but still like my QJLS.

After Blake's suggestion of lighter discs I have been throwing my Dragon as a second disc while practicing. I throw it first and watch the release and then throw the disc "I am going to play" and it I seam to do better.

Almost like a tracer bullet, I guess.

175 Cyclone 2 (10 years old, awsome driver)
175 X -Clone (10 years old, another great driver)
150 DX TeeBird, fun for certain things but I find it difficult to control with too much power behind it.

175 DX Roc
175 DX Shark - my utility disc
177 DX Raven (10 years old and beat, great anhyzer and super roller)

170 DX Orc - I can't contol it but it goes far!

CFR Wraith ( I can't get a decent drive with this to save my life)
171 Quarter K ( sometimes it's awsome, sometimes it's not, shanks hard left)


Aviars for putting

Got a stack of things I've tried -

Aerobie Arrow - it's no Aviar
Arc Angel - decent all-around disc
Panther - nice for straight line drives
Stingray - experimenting for another good roller with this
Elite X XClone - it sucks

I'm in love with my new Valkyrie for it's distance and controllability. I want to try a heavier TeeBird, a Firebird, and maybe another Valk in Pro plastic.

I'm addicted to buying plastic. But at least I'm narrowing it down to what I really like. Plus I'll have a full set for my daughter when she get's into it!
