Considering the distance record was just done with a Blizzard disc that's considerably lighter than the discs I've mostly seen listed in the distance competitions, I'd say that lighter goes farther no matter how far you throw.

That may be true but distance competitions are more about tossing it up and letting the wind help you, no one is breaking records into the wind

In a headwind you're totally right, a heavier disc will usually penetrate better.

my point being something in the 165 to 170 gram range is a good starting point for all around use
