Legal Disc Weights

Hey everyone, This is my first post so here goes.
I have only been playing around 2 months, but it has become a huge addiction. My question is this: What is the max legal weight for discs? From what I read on PDGA it looks like 200g. The reason I ask is I have a 180g super roc, and a 180g star sidewinder, but I have heard these are not legal to use. Any insight would be great. Oh, and love the site Blake, it has helped me more than any other resource. Thanks!

Welcome, Glock!

As far as I know, (which I'll admit isn't very far), the legal max weight for a disc varies depending on what model of disc it is. I think there's a formula that dictates how much mass a disc can have per square inch, depending on it's diameter. So theoretically, a Spider could have a different max legal weight than a Valkyrie, for example. The PDGA dictates a max weight of 200g for any disc even after using this formula.

Everyone: Does this sound somewhat accurate, or should I put the pipe down?

The Roc is legal to use since the max weight allowed for a roc is 180 Grams. Most people I know prefer to throw max weight rocs. The sidewinder is legal only to 175 grams due to its smaller diameter. Alot of times discs marked as max weight will weigh more than they are marked making them illegal. I am assuming then that you weighed your sidewinder on your own to figure out it weighed 180.

Thanks guys! Wasn't expecting a response that quick. The roc is 180, and I just purchased the sidewinder online and was told it was max weight. I have yet to put it on a scale myself. I automatically assumed max weight to mean 180g, because I had seen that before. Hopefully it will weigh in at 175. Thanks again for clearing up my confusion, I didn't know there were different formulas for different discs.

a lot of discs coming out now are over legal weight. as long as they are written with legal weight on them no one really questions/cares.

Glock 23! Gotta love those .40 calibers! Or did you replace the barrel with a .357 sig? :?:

I have had a similar discussion regarding a buzz (I think) and a sidewinder. If I remember correctly the buzz was 180 (I was thinking it was 178 but checked the chart) and the sidewinder was 175.

It's based on ratio to diameter I believe.

I had a recovered memory while waiting for the pdf file to learn. I found a disc years ago that was worn badly and had the stamp rubbed off. We couldn't figure what it was, but it's weight was 179, which I thought was weird.

The closest it flew too was my cyclone 2's. I would catch slack about the legality of the disc (casual rounds) because I had written it's weight on it in sharpie.

Does anyone find it weird that the max on a wasp is 174 and buzz is 180?

max on a wasp is 178g as it is 21.6cm diameter.

max on a roc is 180g as it is 21.7cm.

Hey Outlaw,
Nope, she still has the original .40 barrel. It is my daily carry with 14 rounds of hydrashock 180g (my wife carries a kahr km9). Never saw the need to go to the .357 sig, I just don't think it has proven itself yet, and I am in love with the .40 s&w. The perfect power/velocity combo for ccw imo. It would be nice to come to Texas some time, they are more "friendly" than Ohio is. Thanks again for all the words of wisdom guys.
