If you're sending a text message on your phone, sure, use "r" and "u" if you want. But that's because you don't have a full keyboard and you only have limited space.
On the internet though? Dude... I mean, "lol" is lingo. Who wants to type out "laugh out loud"?? (Personally, I hate that as lingo, too, but it makes sense at least.) But "r" and "u"? The words themselves are only 3 letters, c'mon. I find it harder to stop my train of thought and think about typing "r" instead of just typing "are" like a normal person.
