I am not the least bit religious, but I was raised to understand right and wrong. Today's youth often have to ask "why?" They don't understand that sometimes you do things because they are the right thing to do.
Having said that, I believe there is something to the whole karma debate but not for the sake of some philosophy.
People that do the right thing have a more positive outlook on life which leads to more positive experiences, in other words, good things happen to them.
People that do not do the right thing (steal, lie, cheat..) often have negative perspectives of life. If you dwell on negativity, more negative experiences will follow, thus, bad things happen to them.
