Music! Your top 3 albums of the 00's

Postby Timko » Mon Feb 22, 2010 2:29 pm

Try to keep your list limited to 3. I could list about 20, that would take the argument aspect out of it.

Apparently, I'm all about the odd years.

1. Radiohead - In Rainbows (2007)
I've been a Radiohead fan since I was in high school. This album is really when musically they hit their "Beatles" level. They don't have to produce music that sounds like something, they don't have to produce music to fulfill a contract. They get to make music that is way ahead of it's time while not sounding so obtuse that it turns people off.

2. The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute (2005)
The more and more I listen to this album, the more I can just throw it on and let the entire thing play. Not a bad note played on the entire thing. It's more arty than any of their albums before or since. It just jams!

3. Danny Howells - 24:7 (2003)
I know most of you aren't familiar with EDM (electronic dance music), but I was a dj all though college, and listened to a lot of different dj's. Howells was one of my favorites, and his talent at putting together a collection of songs was really unsurpassed when this album was released. It resurrected the entire GU franchise (only to watch it sink again in the later part of the decade).

... Trail of Dead -- Worlds Apart

Mother Mother -- O My Heart

Autolux -- Future Perfect

QOTSA and its satellites have kicked ass. Rasputina has amazed me for the last 10 years. NIN did some incredible stuff in the last 10 as did Saul Williams. Always gotta love Pigface, gotta love anything Mike Patton.

off the top of my head...subject to change...

at the drive-in - relationship of command - for me this one is no contest

Mars volta - Deloused in the comatorium - true player album, amazing from start to finish...wish they could have kept this standard in their later releases

Radiohead - in Rainbows

Three seems a bit limited, but here's what came to mind first:

The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan

Them Crooked Vultures - S/T

The Fratellis - Costello Music

Albums that might be in the list if you had asked me at another time:

Wolfmother - S/T

The Aquabats - Myths, Legends and Other Amazing Adventures, Vol. 2

The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium

Built to Spill--You in Reverse

Yeah Yeah Yeahs--Fever to Tell

Ween--Quebec

AYWKUBTTOD's Worlds Apart gets a nod, and Devotchka's Una Volta also.

Man, keeping it to 3 is pretty tough.

Probably something like this though:

Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
The National - Boxer
QOTSA - Songs For The Deaf

You could probably swap that National Album out for either of these on any given day:

My Morning Jacket - It Still Moves
Built to Spill - Ancient Melodies of the Future
Drive-By Truckers - The Dirty South

Hmmm, too hard to choose just three from every genre I listen, especially since most of the stuff I listen to never comes out in album form. So here's the top-3 metal albums for me:

Stam1na - Stam1na (2005)
Demetori - Il Mondo dove e finito il Tempo (2007)
Children of Bodom - Hate Crew Deathroll (2003)

CoB was actually (along with Timo Rautiainen) the main reason I began playing guitar. Well, more like my friend's main reason, my main reason was that he needed someone to play the rhythm parts. =)

This is a good list and right up my alley.... but....

The Aquabats  GOd, I haven't heard them in forever. I used to really be into them.

this is tough:

The Fucking Champs - IV
Deftones - White Pony

that's the only two real standouts for me. during most of this decade i've been listening to older stuff. and most of the bands i really like right now their "hot shit" for me is from the late nineties. There is a lot of stuff from this past decade that i do really like. I just can't think of it or don't remember what it's called. I do agree with a lot, A LOT, of what has already been mentioned.

EDIT: after fighting this cold and thinking about it some more, I'm adding Coheed and Cambria - Second Stage Turbine Blade

i'm sure I'll catch some flack for it but I like them and I've enjoyed all their releases so far....it's a guilty pleasure

Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People
Cursive - Domestica

Honorable Mention:
Fugazi - The Argument
Radiohead - Kid A
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Deerhunter - Microcastle
The Microphones - The Glow Pt. 2

Wow, looking at this list, I am apparently a huge douche. Basically, if you pared down Pitchfork's top 200 of the decade to the first half of the decade (minus Microcastle) of rock albums, this is close to what the top would look like.
