Nah, Frances the Mute is more poppy. A lot of people seem to love that endless jag-off wanking. If you make technical enough prog, there will always be an audience regardless of whether the songs are any good or not.

I wouldn't say Frances is more poppy. It's less experimental than Kid A (since it builds on what Pink Floyd and King Crimson did during the prog rock glory days), but it's probably more dense as well.

assuming re-releases don't count...

#1 cursive - the ugly organ (2003)
#2 rainer maria - a better version of me (2000)
#3 the north atlantic - wires in the walls (2005)

saddest album:
still life - the incredible sinking feeling (2003)

best elliot smith-ish album:
owen - no good for no one now (2002)

making this list makes me feel incredibly old...

starting a new thread to make myself feel even older...

looking through my music collection I realize I have a lot more music from the 90s but here are my top 3 from 00's

[1] P.O.S. - Audition (2006)
When I first heard this album I felt like I came upon the promised land for my ears.
Grew up listening to 80's/90's punk rock and around the millenium change started listening to indie/underground hip hop.
This album, and all his work, is a fusion of both and my god do I love it.

[2] Anticon Sampler - 1999-2004
This album totally changed what hip hop could be for me, much of it very abstract and completely different than anything you could hear on the radio.

[3] Strung Out - The Element of Sonic Defiance (2000)
I had been listening to and loving Strung Out from early in their career and this album really marked a significant stage in their evolution. They were beginning to
experiment musically and this was a much more technical presentation as compared to previous albums, yet there wasn't a total abandonment from what it was
about there songs that made them.

Yain't kiddin on this one! This album really turned me onto Why?, Alias, Sole, etc... I had already known a bit about Sage Francis and Dosh but it caused me to seek em out a little bit more.

Awesome, I was doubting anyone here would have known about this album, but so glad somebody else does!
All of it was new to me, but I agree this sampler pushed me to seek out more those same artists.

Although it missed the cut by a couple months, I'm going to have to throw Alkaline Trio's new album This Addiction in there for purely personal reasons.

I've been informed that I get a fair amount of face time in the included live DVD. I don't remember it being recorded, but that's cool with me :D
