Absinthe

Any of you alcohol perfectionists every experience absinthe? Please post.... i received my first bottle today...and eagerly waiting for the weekend to indulge.

all i have to say is dont get drunk and try to take a swig off the bottle !!!!!!!! but other than that if you drink it the right way its not that bad

I've been pretty fed up on absinthe before. My dad and I had deep philosophical conversaions for about an hour and then we were just hammered. You do see some shit that's not normally assosiated with being drunk. More or less it's like your high from the wormwood oil while being fall down drunk.

My dad actually did fall over his footstool, and landed face first on the carpet. Nothing was funnier until my friend came over and my dad re-enacted the fall for him. I think I peed.

Absinthe = Intellectual creative drunk slob
Regular Alcohol = rummbling drunk slob

You'll enjoy it if you like black licqorice. If not use 2-4 sugar cubes per shot and titrate with some cold water to make the drink form a precipitate.

I was in Austrlia for 6 months where Absinthe was legal. First off, you have to like the taste of anise (that licorice taste in Jager and Sambuka). It's also a pretty high alcohol content; there's normally a number in the name of a good bottle, and this represents the %. I perfer 53%'s to some of the higher 60's/low 70's because there's a lot more in the taste than alcohol.
I'm not one who belives that Absinthe has some psychedelic properties because of the lack or wormwood in most modern stuff, but it's drunk is very euphoric and relaxing. I have had some great conversations on it.
One more thing; don't light it on fire. Please. It's simply a barberic thing to do.

I have had the Emile and Kubler before. The Guy is also highly recommended. I just noticed that the Jades, which are probably the best around these days, have gotten much cheaper. They used to sell for over $150, and can now be found for $75.

The term is louche. You can drink absinthe neat (that's straight), but I think more of the flavor comes out with sugar and water. Plus, it turns into a drink you can sip on a hot summer day!

Actually, ive heard about the sugar thing on the Don & Mike show..
A radio show on Am. Once every month or two, they have an "Absinthe Show", where they bring some in, and get ripped up on it... Takin calls, actin the ass.

This one guy that hooks em up with it was telling them all sorts of drinks to make with it, and melting a sugar cube into it was one..
He said the same thing, its a sipping drink, not a shot to down fast.
A buddy of mine has been wantin to get some of this for ages

Of course, you could just shell out $1500+ for a bottle of pre-ban (pre-1914) absinthe...a cache was just found recently, and it's supposed to be in great condition...

Pre-ban absinthe is supposedly one of the rarest vintage liquors you can buy.

Just curious mike, what did you opt for in your purchase, and how did you like it?

i went with Hill's Liquere, 140 proof. I haven indulged yet....for two reasons.....1...its the middle of the week

and 2...i dont have a slotted spoon or sugar cubes yet.

so i will letcha know this weekend.....unless i head outta town...

There's a loophole in the absinthe ban here in the US. It's Illegal to consume, buy and sell inside the united states borders. It, however, is legal to buy from a european vendor who's country has absinthe legalized, and have it shipped to the US and it's legal to posess absinthe...
