The literary telephone game

Postby ChUcK » Thu Apr 29, 2010 4:20 pm

Gimme some input here, dgr.

I thought up a game that can be played at a party but not actually monopolize the entire crowd all at once. One person starts with like a 3x5 notecard or a post-it note and writes a few sentences of a story. This gets handed to the next person along with a blank card and they expand upon the story. This keeps getting handed off to the next person, except you only get to see the card from the person before you, and the rest get put in a pile in order. This, hopefully, will lead to a bizarre and humorous tale, sort of how a simple sentence can turn into madness after being passed down the line during the telephone game. The story would be read all at once after the story was finished, with whatever criteria deems the story complete. 1/2/3 turns apiece, two hours, who knows.

I can't decide if there should be some common theme to adhere to, or if there should be a few proper nouns decided upon so the story has some sort of ultimate thread to cling to, or what? What would also be a good thing to keep in mind when trying this out at a party?

Any thoughts about this game?

This can only end something like this: http://apina.biz/28301.jpg (Note: while the picture is very safe for work, apina.biz overall definitely ISN'T)

Not to burst your bubble, Chuck, but that game's been around for a while, it's known as Exquisite Corpse. I've never actually played it myself, as most folks at parties I've been to are only interested in games that lead to drinking and/or sex. I always thought it'd be fun with the right crowd though. Actually, now that I think about it, I think I did the drawing version of it in a high school art class or something...

Oh, I'm not silly enough to think that I've invented some new game, but the idea did come to me without prior knowledge of this corpse game. I'm not sure if I'll ever know enough to have a truly original thought, but that won't stop me from trying to keep life fresh.

And besides, I'm getting too old and married for the drinking and sex games.

I've been playing two new games recently:

1. Coming up with good last names for people named Richard

Richard Funk, Richard Hand, Richard Wall, Richard Chism, Richard Johnson, Richard Hare, Richard King, Richard Walker, Richard Baker, etc...

2. Substitute one word from a movie title with boner We've done sooooo so many of these and it never gets old.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Boners, Boners in the Outfield, Chasing Boner, The Good, The Bad and the Boner, Save the Last Boner, There Will be Boner, My Best Friend's Boner, White Boners Can't Jump, etc...
