Science is nothing but the observed occurrences of events, but modern physics theorizes that the world is in more dimensions than we can observe. How can science be a complete explanation of everything if itself admits there are things it can't know?

This thread being bumped plus Apoth hanging out over here for two weeks was a bad one-two combo.

Also, an interesting point in xkcd about the collision of a spiritual existence and science.

It also doesn't help that this is all I've been talking about with people for like a month, so I'm more than willing to appease the trolls.

science: we have an idea of how something works. lets use our critical framework to either confirm or deny/amend those ideas.

religion: we have have a direct line into the thoughts and rules of a divine being. everyone who rejects that book is damned to hell and pain and fire.

it makes no sense. religion is a crutch that weak people need to deal with bad things that happen in the world.

So how do you deal with bad things that happen in the world?

The book (I assume the Bible) isn't what you're rejecting. It's the grace of God it sounds like you don't want.

Also, I don't wish to sound like I'm above doubting. The concept of God's grace is something I'm currently trying to resolve within myself.

i deal with it by getting pissed off and banned from forums.

its the hubris we (well...you) show in the pretense that we have the capability to comprehend something that supposedly created everything...of which there is no evidence of, that pisses me off about the evangelicals.

on doubt: lets play a game. its called 'test your faith.'

you play this game by testing your faith in christianity and the bible. you do this by playing with rattlesnakes and drinking bleach (NIV Mark 16:17-18: 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”)

what say you? why are there so few true christians out there that show their faith the way jesus instructed? are you ready to man up and take a shot?:)

My faith is not that God is going to stop me if I try to poison myself. It's that God is going to complete me as a person because he's graceful. I'm probably the wrong person to discuss the semantics and interpretations of scripture with because I've never read the Bible. I'm going to start reading Mark next month when I have some time with one of my friends.

My understanding is a lot more child-like at this point.

I don't believe in God because I'm afraid of what will happen to me after I die. I believe in God because he helps me my current life.

how does it do that?

edit:

actually let me ask you two questions that will give me more insight into where you are in your search:

how are you sure that there is a god?

what makes you think protestant judeo-christian god is the 'only true god'?

Things often let me down. Myself, people, relationships, jobs, substances, etc. Every time I've tried to put something in that ultimate place of satisfaction, I've felt a sense of disappointment when I was let down. God doesn't let you down. His love is unconditional.

I think where I often get astray is when my interpretation of love doesn't match his interpretation of love. I've often wanted a God that totally goes with my moral beliefs, but what's the point of a God if he can't challenge me into questioning what's going on around me? If I got to pick and choose the things I liked about God, I wouldn't need a God at all. I could take that roll. Of course, I'd at some point let myself down, getting me into this mess I described earlier.
