I have a big computer problem! I need help!

Postby jmammo » Sun Jan 21, 2007 2:21 pm

Normally I am good with computers but I have a really BIG problem. I just set a password for my pc and guess what, there where to many characters to use it so when it asks me to log in when I start up the pc i can't type it all. And to make matters worse I don't know the administrator password. And to make matters even worse I don't have a real copy of xp. I tried booting in safe mode but I need the administrator password to get in. I tried windows recovery with the 9 in 1 windows cd I have (it has 9 windows made os's on it) but it asks me for the administrator password again when I try to start the recovery even though it shouldn't. I don't know wtf to do and I really need some help I am freaking out. :x
Thanks,
Jack

ummm so you entered a password but it didnt all fit in the window? like if you tired to enter the password as discgolf but only discgo would fit? shouldnt you be able to just type in as much of the password that fit in the window? I have a password recovery program somewhere but ive never had to use it and I assume you have to be in windows to install it. maybe you can slave the drive in another machine and get to it that way. I will do a little research and see if I can find anything for you. If worse comes to worse you can always format and reinstall.

I believe this one is free as well and is accompanied by detailed instructions. again, not something I have ever used. You just have to remember that computers can be fragil things and that sometimes things ARE going to go wrong. If there is something on there you cant live without you better back it up regularly. shit happens, dont panic  If it were me I would probly just format and reinstall.[/url]

unfortunately you cannot buy a full version of windows unless you are buying a new system. most pc stores can sell you a full version if you are buying a motherboard or hardrive. if you have a legit older windows you can buy the upgrade version but its a real pain in the ass to have to install win98 and then upgrade it. either way it can be pretty expensive.

as for fixing the password thing, I saw another article that recommended using one of the free cd based linux os's (I think ubuntu is one but ive not messed with linux much) to boot up and then go into the windows registry to locate and/or reset the password. I couldnt find any more detailed instruction but the theory seems solid.

I have always wanted to dabble in Linux but I have just never had the time, and I still don't. Xp home is about 100 dollars more then I thought so ya I think the old pc will have to wait until I can get some more money.

OEM restrictions have laxed a lot lately on what constitutes qualifying hardware.

a local store sells win XP home for $99.95 w/ purchase of hardware but you can buy a case screw for $0.05 :P

thats not so bad then. about 6 months after xp came out I had to buy a new harddrive just to get them to sell me the full version of home. I hate to see what they will want for vista, but since Im not gameing heavily now I doubt I will need it for quite some time.

just to let you know, xp home is going to be stopped being supported by microsoft soon.

if you are going legit, you may want to drop for media center or something.

damn really? Not that Ive ever called microsoft for help anyway, but that means all softwear vendors will stop supporting it.

mainly means they will stop supplying windows updates to slow your computer down and/or close off some gaping security hole that is exploitable by hax0rs
