Home made soda

This is a spin-off a the beer-brewing thread. Does anyone make their own soda?

My girlfriend makes ginger beer which is very similiar to ginger ale but with a little more bite.

I tried making homemade rootbeer a few times, it always tasted like crap though.

when i was a kid we used to make homemade rootbeer every summer. used hires concentrate i think. Always tasted really good

I think I bought the old style concentrate,. hires is considered a modern concentrate, I should have bought that instead. The old stuff tastes like tire rubber.

We used to make root beer, but those were the times when everyone shared with everyone. We'd make them in those 5 gallon coolers. Now, it would go flat too soon.

I do remember one thing: I tried bottling when I was a kid, and they exploded. So, I am leary of that. I wonder if I could get away with re-using 2 and 3 litter plastic bottles.

I forgot to add that homemade rootbeer and some of the grape we made was the best soda I've ever tasted.
