Actually I'm reading The Omnivore's Dilemma. It's pretty good.

I read that one with my daughter last year. She has become a high-fructose corn syrup Nazi since we read that.

I was kinda leaning towards that but my freaking out has kinda reduced since I read the first part to a dull "drink less soda and things that are classified as "ready-made snacks" at Wal-Mart".

Yeah, The Omnivore's Dilemma didn't scare me like The Jungle did. I couldn't eat meat for months after that. Good thing I had the vegan girlfriend to cook for me then.

Actually, it was the damn vegan girlfriend who made me read the book in the first place. I've been played.

I largely avoid high-fructose corn syrup. Not because I think it's inherently bad or anything, just because I don't like the way things it is in make my body feel.

Soda: gross. Makes me feel like my teeth are dissolving after just one. The only soda I drink is natural root beer that uses honey, and I drink that sparingly.

Candy and pre-packaged snack foods: gross. Makes me want to vomit.

I should probably go vegan again, or at least vastly cut back on my meat consumption now that I'm a better cook. Almost starved myself to death (apparently not an entirely bad thing from what I'm hearing about low caloric diets nowadays) when I was vegan cuz my sucking cooked.

as far as novels go, the jungle has had more influence on me than any other non-academic book i can think of. i don't know how many times i have read it. the first time was when i was in 5th grade. it illustrates the dark side of modernity like a bomb fire but i didn't know that when i was in 5th grade. i was just grossed out by the animal and human abuse.

i suggest we never mention this "prerube" again, in any form. he has salted our earth, changed our climate, spoiled and sullied our meme, and built bridges for the invasion of nothing but the most troubled from dgcr. he played with fire with no training in alchemy. his arrogance and ignorance led to the destruction of our lulz filled treasure chest. the great thread that captured the peaks and valleys of dgr and dgcr relations is now gone, kaput. years of social relations frozen in time, now forever lost. may prerube backwards x-step from dgr's history and its collective memory. the unintended consequences of purposeful action leave consequences that we are now forced to deal with. may prerube's hackneyed ways be compared with those of the likes of djgermyjam, the naturally athletic one, matt, and others of the same squaloring class, but only in the future. kill the cancer before it spreads.

Both books are solid reads for different reasons. When I was in middle school, The Jungle was an eye-opener for sure. A few years removed from that, I bought the Omnivore's Dilemma for a lot of people for Christmas this year. A few have since mentioned noticing just how much corn-based shit is out there (not the least of which being HFCS) and being appalled by it.

Just like corn products have invaded our food supply, try Plastic: A Toxic Love Story to see how plastic has invaded just about every other aspect of our lives.
