board membership

Postby swel304 » Mon Mar 26, 2007 10:34 pm

Ok, so I was really board and clicked on the memberslist just for something to do. Just looking for funny names or whatever to have something to do. WOW! about page 14 starts the people that have joined since december. the member list is 26 pages long... so 50% have joined in the last 3 months. thats like 600 new users since x-mas, which is about the same amount that has joined over the previous 3 years. granted about 80% of them have never even posted but still..... congratz blake, on and very successfull site. I dont know what your doing but you must be doing it right, and then some.

I'm just speculating, but I would bet that a large majority of those new member registrations are spam bots.

The Forum that I run for our club was recieving 15-20 new registrations a day, from spam bots, starting about a week before xmas. As soon as we upgraded or forum and added some extra registration features the number of spam bots registering for accounts has decreased to 0.

I just looked at page 24 and of those with websites listed there were alot of blogs, discount Rx and cheap cigs sites. While I suppose some of those could be legit members I bet nearly all of them are not

I guess I should have looked a bit closer. I figured spam accounts were being deleted since there arent a ton of spam posts.

Just a general question, not too concerned about the precise history, but when did spambots come into existence and become such a force on the internet? My club's message board is having server issues thanks to a spambot/spamperson that kept posting messages with porn tags.

Thanks, man. The webmaster is already taking care of it as we speak (he's just a volunteer, though, so it takes a few days). I'll make sure he knows about the link.

What Forum software are you guys using. We had SMF 1.0.7 and just by upgrading to SMF 1.1.1 all our troubles were eliminated.
