1080i vs 720p

I have a HDTV that supports up to 1080i. I have a Xbox 360 that supports multiple HD resolutions. I was at the game store the other day and the guy tells me to switch from 1080i to 720p because it'll be a better picture.

I know progressive is better than interlaced, but is 720p really better than 1080i? I read somewhere else that it's pretty hard to distinguish between 1080i and 1080p. Since 1080p is the highest stadard right now, and 1080i is supposed to look nearly identical, I figured 1080i should be the better one.

Anyone got info on this?

for fast moving pictures like sports or video games, 720p is better. all things being equal you'll probably not notice the difference unless you are told what to look for. the two formats display close to the same amount of information per second

with your xbox360, it's native resolution is 720p, to do 1080i the signal has to be upconverted. the more a signal gets played with, the more likely there will be noise introduced.

when it's all said and done, you'll probably have to look closely if you can even see a difference.

Also, a lot depends on your screen size and distance you are away from the screen. Basically 42" and smaller at 6+ feet away, you won't be able to tell much of a difference between 720 and 1080, i or p.

Most people don't know that nothing is filmed in 1080, it's just 720 upconverted to 1080. The standard for filming is just now getting to 720 so it's not worth paying for the 1080. Hell, I still don't have an HDTV and I won't until I absolutely have to or until it gets under $400 for a 32". You really can't tell the difference between the 2 unless you have a top dollar plasma, even then it's not a big difference. They will probably come out with a better higher pixel tv in the next few years,so it's probably better to hold out or find the cheapest one available.

I lucked out and got a clearence set at Best Buy. 30" widescreen for $300. They had 3 of them. Haven't made the switch yet, I haven't had time to play lately.

I dont even plug my 360 into my 27" tv anymore.
It stays plugged into my 22" Flat Panel widescreen monitor.
MMMMMMMM big screen monitor + 360 = clean edges and no fuzzy text

That's what I'm going to do if I ever get a 360. I'm not really into huge tv's, a 42" would be the biggest I would ever get with 36" being my ideal size. I'm waiting till they drop under $400 for a quality one then I'll make the switch.
