Dvd Backup tech question

Postby mothrows » Tue Oct 16, 2007 12:09 pm

I'm backing up my movies using Dvd Shrink 3.2 and Starburn. My problem is that unless I'm using Memorex 4x RW (memorex is the only brand I've tried that is RW) I can't get the movie to burn. I bought a big bundle of Maxwell Dvd-R 16x and whenever I try to burn onto one, it keeps kicking the disc out and saying error. Can anybody help me out? I've even tried slowing down the burn speed to 4x when I use the Maxwell 16x and still no love.

If you burn coasters, just take them out to a field and practice eliminating off-axis torque with them.

What size are the dvds you are burning to? You could try using an imaging software, like Alcohol 120%, make an exact image of the DVD and try burning the image to a dual layer DVD.

I'm burning to the same size dvd's, I just don't understand why the dvd rw's will burn but the dvd r's won't.

First of all, I think Maxell media is cheap...not 100% sure on that, but I generally try to stick with Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. Also, I'm not familiar with Starburn...I use DVD Decrypter and it works great. It shouldn't be a problem with the size of the media, as DVD Shrink is made to compress DVD-9's to DVD-5's. Sometimes if you try to compress too much though, it'll make the resulting image file just a smidge too large for a DVD-5. When you run DVD Shrink, it makes an image file in whatever directory you choose, you can try burning that with different software, to see if that works.

Are you sure that your dvd burner is compatible with -r and not just +r?
Alot of older drives either use one or the other........

My computer is just a year old, but that's a good question. How do I check to see if it's -r compatible? Sorry, that's probably a stupid question, but I don't know how to do it.

Well mine says on the front "DVD+R DL", but yours is probably different. Do you have the model number of the drive or the model of your pc (if you bought it from a retailer)?

This is what I could find.

DVD+-RW and then some random assortment of letters after that. I've checked out Starburns help guide and I still can't figure it out. I guess I'm going to just have to stick to the memorex rw and chalk up the 50 maxwell dvd-r as a loss. :(

How much RAM do you have? And what kind of burner? I've had crappy media before where I had a bunch of coasters (CD's, not DVD's though), but I was still able to get a few good discs out. The fact that it works with one kind of disc but not another does seem to indicate it's a problem with the media, but it still seems a bit weird.
