Is this disc tournament legal?

Postby Midnightbiker » Thu Oct 09, 2008 4:41 pm

I got an Ace Race disc (Discraft Impact) from someone here on the site. I really like the way this disc flies.

I ran into a guy at a course that I have played in a few tournaments with. He joined our group, and in casual talking, I mentioned this disc that I have and how much I like it. He said" you better make sure that disc is PDGA approved, before you use it in a tournament. I did look on the bottom and it is not stamped with anything. I was shocked. Now here is the question:

Even though this disc does not have a "PDGA APPROVED" on the bottom , but this mold is in production, and can be bought, can I use this disc in a tournament?

Also, what if I removed the stamp , and just had a blank disc, do you think anyone would notice?

I am wondering if I can use this disc, or do I have to go and buy another Impact just for tournaments?

I don't believe all Ace Race discs are submitted for approval and it currently is not approved. I haven't heard whether it's been submitted yet and I'm on that committee. I think Discraft has sometimes retooled the Ace disc based on feedback before submitting it for approval.

It's a 2-shot penalty for throwing an illegal disc the first time and disqualification if you continue to do so.

If it's the Impact, that's last year's disc and is 100% legal. If someone gives you grief about it, tell them to go home and look it up for themselves if they're that worried about it.

It is a 2007 Ace race disc. An Impact.

The '07 Ace Race discs are approved. They don't have the approval stamp because at the time of the '07 Ace Race they were just prototypes and they were not approved yet. PDGA approved the Impact after the Ace Race was done with and all the Ace Race Impacts became legal.

2007 Ace Race disc now PDGA approved
Based on overwhelming player enthusiasm for the 2007 prototype, Discraft is happy to announce that the disc has been approved for tournament use by the PDGA. Renamed the Impact, the disc joins the line of Discraft long range drivers, with a stability rating of 0.0. Your Ace Race proto version is also now tournament legal.

Isn't the turbo putt still legal until the end of the year when the rule of uniform rim goes into effect... not that I even though about getting one

Turbo Putt is still legal for PDGA play until Jan 1, 2009. The new specs have been active since Jan 1 of this year. Turbo just had an exception.

Unless it's a NT or A tier tournament, me personally, I'd fall on the same side as scrabble rules - it's up to the person making the accusation to prove that it's not legal.

For the Japan open, it's somewhat simple - if it says a weight greater than 150, you're hosed. But when a mainstream disc from one of the major manufacturers is questioned, I think it's a little ticky tack to even bring it up.

I haven't researched at all, so can't say with any facts, but my guess would be there aren't many Discraft or Innova molds that are not PDGA approved. Certainly, it wouldn't be my first assumption. Both those companies need their discs to be PDGA approved because most of the discs will be used by their pros at PDGA events.

I know they aren't approved yet and have heard that you can't use them in Tourneys. However, if I saw someone using one, I wouldn't care because if they submitted the disc it would get approved and probably will be approved in the near future. But I could see someone possibly calling you out about it, unfortunately.....just my 2 cents....

They sell it here, so my disc should be legal:

So this one is legal too? The Impact is legal because it was submitted to the pDGA and approved, not because your online vendor sells them.

2007 Ace race disc was not PDGA approved when it was introduced for the Ace Races. It later became approved retroactively once it was submitted and became the Impact.

2008 Ace Race disc is currently not PDGA approved because it hasn't been submitted for testing. Should Discraft decide to submit it for testing and it passes, it may become approved retroactively at some point as a new Discraft disc.

It's uncommon that an Ace Race disc is PDGA approved before it's used for Ace Races. But most of them (maybe all?) have later been submitted for approval.
