- Too much pressure will tear the leaf
- Dragging the tool will tear the leaf

For the tearing problem maybe you could try a layer of something else (aluminum foil?) on top of the leaf. Something that will transmit the heat to the leaf, but will be more resistant to the friction of the tool. Also, I wonder if the disc companies use a special kind of foil. Maybe something shiny, but plastic based like a plastic film? Something that has a lower melting point than metal so that it is less likely to deform the disc. Or like you said, maybe just adjustable heat would do it.

how hot do the hot stamps get? i have gold, silver, palladium and veregated copper that i would love to paste all over my black star roadrunner!!! If i had a metal plate in the shape or near the shape of the disc dome with the foil laid out on it what temp would i have to get it too? and what temp does the disc start to melt...cuz that would be bad? so no pattern other than a sick gold plated disc!!!! omg!

Could you get pieces of large heavy-gauge wire (or metal coat hangers) hot enough to melt the golf leaf onto the disc? If so, seems that would be a pretty easy, cheap, low-tech way of making a sort of branding iron with your own custom design.

I could even see creating a stippled (sp?) branding iron by cutting multiple pieces of wire at the same length and attaching them on-end to a piece of wood (like the way the bristles of a toothbrush are attached to the head) to form a design.
