Search Function Problem?

Postby Dogma » Sun Nov 23, 2008 9:10 am

It looks like the search function still only accesses posts made since the conversion to the new board. Any chance that it will ever access the stuff from more than six weeks ago?

It's a flaw within PHPBB. I've never seen a forums, where teh search worked correctly.

That's kinda odd...I bet it's a query that needs work...it's probably a simple fix.

Yeah, I have to think it's fixable. Most forums I frequent have working search functions. They may not offer complexity in their searches, but at least the functions that are there actually work. I'd love to see it fixed. It'd be a shame if all those years of DGR wisdom were lost. Next thing you know people who are unable to search will be posting questions about the differences between various Rocs... :)

I have researched the problem and can probably fix it...I need to have the DB backed up before I were to run the fix.

tho with 100000 posts...it may require the website to be down for some time..... could take a day to rebuild the search index...:(

I realize it isn't my decision, but it seems worth doing. I would think that most forum members would think the indexing is worthwhile. Can there be a page that comes up explaining what is going on during the process? What quiet(ish) days are coming up? Maybe Wednesday before Thanksgiving?

Just use Google. Advanced search on just this site. Problem solved.

You could setup a secondary database (if the hosting account has the available space), and rebuild the search index on whichever one the forum isn't using at the time, then switch it over...

Anything new on this front? It's kind of getting on my nerves and also increasing the frequency of already-answered questions on the boards.

as has been said above. Use the google advanced search or just use the normal google searchbox like this.
the following is an example of a search for the ever popular buzz vs roc
buzzz vs. roc site:discgolfreview.com

As for getting the searchbox to work here. All of the admins volunteer their work, so the only thing you will get by nagging the admins is that they dont want to volunteer anymore. And since you can easily get around the problem atm, by using the method above, I dont want to hear anymore whining.

Can you really call it whining if you're the first person to make a post in this thread in over a month?

But while we're on the subject... Although Google search does work, it lacks handy features like: filtering by author, searching only within certain forums/subforums, and displaying by either posts or topics. I'd like to think that was more of a clarification than a whine. :D That said, I love my moderators. Being a moderator sucks. Thanks for doing it. PM me your address. I'll send you a disc.

haha thx but that wont be necessary it would cost you more for s&h than the disc costs.

I just saw that there was a new post in the thread and apparently havent checked this section in a while

I would assume that you could enter the authors name into the google searchstring and it would find it.

I agree it would be nice to have a well working insite search, but it will get done whenever solty feels like it, which is the way it should be. (Dont get me wrong if I was paying for a service/product/whatever I would expect things to work. But we arent, so whatever work gets done on here is done on somebodies free time.) I didnt want to come of as an ass, but Im tired of people wanting a whole lotta stuff, without paying for it. (This forum is not bad in that respect at all. There is much worse out there.)
