did any one every try the detergent method with any success?

well seeing as in the GDS video they were pouring it out of a dish soap bottle id say it will probly work

was talking with my brother earlier and with minimal effort you can wire an old fan to a dimmer switch to get a fully variable speed spinner. Throw that fan in a box and set up the switch outside and you should be golden.

A little birdie told me the way its done at GDS is by using an old box fan and hand or dish soap. My buddy borrowed some plastic to experiment with and used this method. His dyes came out great, I'll post pics once he gives me my discs back. Also no pic posting until I get a new phone. My blackberry 'sploded and my new super duper iphone wont get here until the 19th.

I was able to get it to work as well. I mixed Rit with dish soap then added a little acetone to help the dye set. The only problem is the color is not very vibrant... I plan on trying to cook a disc after applying the dye, I figure this should get the dye to "pop" a little more.

Have you tried soaking them for a long time. I heard from a good source that most factory spin dyes soak for 5 days before they are rinsed. As long as you dont mess with them to much the dye gel should stay in place.

I let them sit a full day. They seemed pretty dry at that point but I could try letting one sit for a week, it couldn't hurt.

when i did one i used the powdered rit and soap mixture the soap actually dried up in about a day if you can believe it, my next course of action is to mix liquid rit and soap instead.

That's what I'll be doing soon, attach a board to an old fan motor, dimmer switch for speed control, use some 3m double stick tape to stick the disc to the board, put it all in a 5 gal bucket to contain the mess. I might even seal the fan motor in the bottom so the dye doesn't get to it.

Any tips on soap/liquid rit mixture or just as much dye as I can and still keep it thick? Any soaps better than others or just clear soap?

I did the fan thing last night. You don't really need the dimmer control for it. The fan works great, when doing this use 1/4" wood to not put a lot of strain on the fan motor.

Here is a quick video of the fan in action. This was a practice disc, JK Aviar. dye doesn't hold so it's good to play around with.
