Spam Posters

Postby roadkill » Mon Nov 06, 2006 10:42 am

Is there anyway we can expedite the deletetion of spam and spam posters from the site? I was thinking of a mailbox or a thread devoted to the reporting of such offenders.

Offhand, I know of two that should be deleted:
1. The egoldinvestment hypster on the misc thread
2. The Encejohatedtard a-hole that keeps pushing "Shakira Nude Video Fun Site" on several threads.

On other boards I frequent I have seen a button called' report this post to moderator'. That could speed up the process and is probably a feature just not activitated right now...

Is it possible to implement one of those "type what you see in this box" things to register accounts?

I think that the software version that this board uses is older and has several known vunrabilities. As far as deleting them I am going to offer to do it for Blake if he wants, I am on here every week day and notice them pretty soon, we will see.

i run a forum and have the same issues. However, from my own experience, i've tried a slew of resolutions per the phpBB forums and nothing really works. The phpBB software is very hacker/spammer friendly. I know they are working on version 3.0....and have noted that there is alot of hacker/spammer prevention built into it.

i will be adding a 3rd moderator, hopefully this evening.

honestly, i don't have very much time to patrol the board right now on a daily basis.

we DO have the "type this word in the box" thing going on, but the bots are beating that. this is the newest version of phpbb. that doesn't mean it doesn't have security holes :P

I think the moderator solution is the best one. There will always be people who can figure out how to write code to get around security tactics. They can't however prevent someone from just outright deleting their spam bs.

I do a daily check of this board many times a day and also take care of our clubs board and have to say with the amount of traffic on this site the spam is pretty minimal. Blake if you ever need an additional hand just let me know, I may as well be doing something useful while I'm online :)

looking for 1-2 more people to help as board admins. main focus will be approving/rejecting new accounts once all the spam accounts get deleted.

mainly looking for people that are on/around a computer a lot and hopefully willing to check in once or twice on weekends.

ideally looking for someone i know pretty well, but willing to make considerations.

Weekends could be tough with the dg crowd.

I couldn't spend a bunch of time, but would be willing to look through a "ban candidate" thread periodically. (Excellent suggestion roadkill!)

With such a thread, the process for the moderators would be look up the ID of the ban candidates. If they do nothing but spam, get rid of them. If they seem to contribute, but are not following posting guidelines set out. (illegal activities posts) then send a message "suggesting" they follow the guidelines and what may happen if they don't.

If we had such a thread, might I suggest Sterpotedteen8.
