Why Join the PDGA?

I've played a grip of tournaments lately and have another 6 planned before the end of the year. I've yet to join the PDGA and wonder why I should? Other than keeping track of my rating what does the PDGA do for someone who plays a lot of tournaments?

Don't they charge you a temp fee every time you play and are not a PDGA member? I know places around here do and that would save you a good deal of cash.

They do but I think it's only $5. I could enter a tournament every month and still not equal the $70 they want for a years membership.

Up in Minnesota its a $10 non-pdga fee so that would probably make it worth it, but for $5 it really isn't.

I was just on the PDGA site and other the work they do promoting disc golf I can't see the real impetus to join.

Yea $5 is nothing. It is $10 here so that blows for us.

if your just casual dont worry about it. if you want to travel you get a discount on hotels.

and you also get your own sweet lifetime number too!

I don't believe many people join the PDGA for the benefits it gives them. They join to help the PDGA grow the sport. Some people don't agree with how they are trying to do that and don't join. I think it's easier for the AMs because of the cost. A lot of pros don't join because of the cost vs tournaments entered. If you're younger and plan on playing a lot, perhaps it's worthwhile, if you're older and player fewer, then maybe not.

I too have been having this battle in my mind, why join they wouldnt do anything for me. im just a number.

why not join they are helping a sport that i love and want too see it get to the big time.

It's been $10 as the nonmember fee everywhere, not $5 for two years now. If you join for the first time after August 31, you get the remainder of 2009 plus all of 2010 for your $50 membership as an Am, $75 pro.

I'm a paying member, even in years like this year where I have yet to play more than one sanctioned event...

Can't say I'm particularly impressed.

I've called and tried to get them to put one of my tournaments on my rating 6 or 7 times over the last year since that tournament (the TD spelled my name wrong and I was still waiting to be assigned my number), and every time they say it'll be done, and it's STILL not on my rating.

Beyond that, they send me a magazine that sucks, that I have NO interest in them wasting postage, printing costs, and natural resources to get to me.

But it does save me $10 per sanctioned tournament...so if you plan on playing enough tournaments to cover the price, it's a decent discount.

I joined in February 2008, and I still haven't got my disc & mini. They've sent it to me three times, and every time it just magically disappears... I've payed both years in January, and my status has been not current till late april...

Still gonna pay next year too.

I thought it was $5 per tourney but if it's $10 I might as well do it. I've got enough tournaments coming up till December to cover that cost. Plus like chuck said it cover me all of next year as well if I buy it after aug 31st.
