I believe the 40 gig one is not backwards compatible with the ps2.
When I bought my 40 gig I remember that being in the specs

Wow, guess backwards compatibility is the deal breaker. C'mon now, for 200 you get a Blu-Ray player and one of the best gaming systems around, with network updates to keep your blu-ray player up to date, not to mention you can download to own or rent, movies/tv shows.
