Account authentication required by Admins

Postby Blake_T » Fri Nov 10, 2006 8:51 am

Due to smarter spam-bots, all new accounts must be approved by a site admin. This should hopefully happen within 24 hours (ideally sooner) and be relatively pain free.

Feel free to email admins if your account access has not been granted.

you can tell most spam bots by their name...as well as having ICQ #s...cuz not many people use ICQ anymore....as well as the messed up websites they have in their info. Just 2 seconds of inspection does the job...

yep. an email of nwkenr3243@323nk234l32.ru is usually a good tip as well :P

or a webpage that has xanax or cialis in the name also is another big one :P

We reset our forum. every day that passes more spammers arrive. After about three weeks I had to change it to where I approve every new account which kind of helps, but they still register every day and even though they cant post thier names show up in the member list until I delete them. I know there are ways to ban but the names always have random stings of numbers so that wont work. how can I see/ban the ip address? will it even help? any other techniques to slow down the flood?

on my board I've prevented anyone with an *.info or *.ru and a couple other email addresses I've seen spammers use. It helps a bit, but I still get some that get though, not too bad but still annoying.

i can enter *.info under ban email addresses but it does not show up afterwards. the unban email address box still says no email addresses banned. am I doing something wrong?

I run the BDGA forum, and we had the same problems.

Personally I use User authentication, as 80% use fake email addresses, I didn't want to be bombarded with authentication requests. Then I clear out the dead ones each morning. Agree with other people that banning as many domains as possible helps, so *@*.ru etc.

But what really nailed it was these two...

Luckily, one of my buddies is happy messing around in code, so added these and bob's your uncle
Still get occasionals, maybe one a day or so.
