Drivers only going 30 ft. farther than putters

Postby cornelius » Tue Apr 27, 2010 7:45 am

Hey I have been working on my snap a lot lately and can crank it out to about 330ft. on a drive and it feels like i am getting pretty good snap. But on a good drive my drivers are only going 30 ft. farther than my putters. Just wondering what i am doing wrong and if there is something i can do to get up to 400 ft.

Here are some driving videos:

It's probably nose angle issues. To me it looks like your weight isn't nearly far enough forward and that you're "scooping" (going from high to low) during your pull through.

I'd try building your throw backwards from a standstill. Keep that late acceleration, but work on getting over your plant foot at the hit.

which drivers? Driving 330 with putters is a FANTASTIC place to be. I would say go with slower drivers like the leopard, JLS, XL etc. and see how far you are pushing those.

Lead the turn with your hips more to generate power, and get your back leg into the throw and off the ground. You're dragging it pretty bad, which is killing your power and causing your weight to not get forward as much as you need to keep the nose down.

Relevant part of the Dan Beto video is here. Particularly pay attention to the back leg kick thing.

Try shortening the final step by 15-25 cm and see if you can turn faster toward the target thus generating more power. Training wrist and forearm strength helps in maintaining the wrist down orientation until after the disc has left.
Flat shots need running on the center line of the tee and planting each step on the center line. Anhyzer needs running from rear right to front left with the plant step hitting the ground to the left of the line you're running on. Hyzer is the mirror of that.

Be careful with your back. Prior to hurting my back I had heard from many people with back pains and those that knew others who had bad backs that back is the worst place to injure. I think they weren't thinking of losing mind and self from head injuries but for pain and limits to living and working. People get to sit in a chair for entire life time from back injuries. I'm injured for life in the back and I count myself lucky for being able to work and play DG and after a couple of years of recuperation being able to twist my back at the waist as far as it'll go in reach back for max D generation. And man I hurt. Had I not had good advice for self help gymnastics I'd be in excruciating pain and on meds not working for most of the time. Certainly not playing. So keep yourself healthy and let it heal as much as it can.

And most importantly learn to stop early enough not to injure yourself and learn injury prevention and pain self removal for your ailments by warming up and gym work. DG is hard on the body so it's a cheap insurance to cross training all the muscle groups and especially posture muscles that is deep muscles like stomach and back muscles. An added benefit is being able to trow farther and not getting tired and making bad decisions while playing.

Just to confirm on the shortening of the final step. I was doing sort of the same thing you're doing now. Blake and I was talking and as soon as I said that I'm throwing my putters almost as far as my drivers. I just don't feel the same when I drive and feels like my weight is back and I can't rotate when I have a driver. He said, "you're stepping too far on your last step." Changed that, instantly felt my self rotate, weight shifted forward and got my fluid follow through I was feeling somewhat on the putters. Now it's even better on the putters and drivers too. I'm throwing my putters 320-350' with Cyclones landing 380-400. I hope you get well soon, you sound like you were getting a good idea of what you were doing, I really hope it helps!

A good stable putter will hold the line for a long time, and takes a lot longer to get there than a driver.

I love watching putters go a long distance, they display so much character in their flights...
