Contact paper or Vinyl

I have seen that some people use vinyl and some people use contact paper. I know that vinyl is more expensive, but is there a difference in the quality of work when using one or the other? Thanks.

I can and have done anything I need to using clear contact paper from Walmart. What is vinyl? I thought that was used for records.

Ummm ok? mabey im not spelling it right but vinyl, like sign vinyl? I thought people wold know what that is. But since im getting such confusing anwsers, mabey the right question is what material do you use to cover your disc in the dye?

Contact paper is that stuff you put on your cabinet shelves. It's a way weaker form of sign vinyl, basically.

Contact paper is all I have ever used to Dye. I have done some pretty complicated dye work and it works very well. I use a Hair Dryer to make sure it is adhered, sometimes it will leave some adhesive behind but nothing a little Gel Goo Gone wont take care of.

with vinyl I don't have to:

-use a hair dryer
-ever have to remove extra adhesive (with decent vinyl, at least)
-worry about bleeds unless I really push my luck near the edges.
-admit that I use contact paper

LOL, well for cost/beginners or intermediate dyers out there contact paper will over all do the trick, I started with contact paper ($8/ 24''x25' via hobby lobby) and I've done some pretty intricate designs with success! But now that I've done a buncha dyes I find myself with a "bleeding phobia" whenever I use contact paper with very small or thin areas.

I recently purchased some of that Oracle 651 vinyl I read on here was supposed to be pretty good. I bought (1) roll of white and (1) roll of transparent, Have only dyed the transparent stuff and it's pretty much the same as contact paper but a lil more expensive (Do Not Buy!) , Even though I haven't dyed the white yet, I've wrapped 2 or 3 discs with it and it feels much better than the transparent. I was using 3M graphic film vinyl scraps from a local sign shop that worked really really well, but was a pain in the A$$ to get air bubble free when wrapping a disc.

So for the record, I use both but for special or paid dyes I go with VINYL
