spelling, grammar, commas, apostrophes and punctuation

Postby marmoset » Sat Jul 10, 2010 6:04 am

I'm not even close to perfect, I'll be the first to admit it.

But seriously guys, nails on a chalkboard.
It's hard to take some of you seriously.

This isn't directed at anyone in particular and isn't even limited to this site.

Just syain'...

Agreed completely. It takes barely more effort to write a neat, correct, and intelligent looking post that's much easier for everyone else to read and a lot more pleasant to look at.

I'm right with you guys. I try not to be a grammar nazi, but goddamn, the English language is in state of crisis. One thing I see constantly that never fails to get under my skin is the arbitrary use of apostrophes. Somehow, along the way, it's entered the collective consciousness that if you want to talk about more than one of something, you need to put an apostrophe in there. People, if you're trying to get rid of plastic, you're selling "discs" not "disc's." "Aces" not "ace's." "Shoes" not "shoe's." And so on. It's particularly annoying because in this case, it actually takes more effort to be wrong.

Marmo, I'm sure you were extra flustered on the other board.

I will only say that this thread was not inspired by anyone who posts on DGR.

I agree with you Marm. I'm sick of those that use "your" incorrectly and the text syntax like "u r," etc. English is really not that difficult...
My putter doinks harder than yours!

Especially when the OP uses "syain"

I can think of a couple of times where it physically hurts to try to read someones posts, but usually its decent enough to figure out whats trying to be said.

Perfect, no. When it gets so bad you have to read it slow or sound it out in your head you have to draw a line somewhere. Some of the posts on the other board made me feel like my eyes were going to bleed.
