Earthquake in OK right near my home

Postby dgdave » Wed Oct 13, 2010 12:15 pm

SO, I was in my first earthquake this morning. The epicenter was about 5-10 miles from my house. It was a very weird feeling. Crazy shit for central OK

there are a lot of faults up there. and a littler further up in the midwest, there is an old plate that fused there millions of years ago so they get big activity. crazy to think somewhere near me(round rock) could feel that quake.

It was felt up to about 1,000 miles away and was given a final 5.1 on the rictor scale.

Everywhere can have quakes. Some places just have them less frequently than others. We're just micro-fleas on a big dog :D

I thought OK had enough "fun" with tornadoes, but evidently they have quakes once in a while. I had no idea either. I knew about the New Madrid and the 1812 quake on it that caused the Mississippi River to run backwards for a few hours. Not fun, but the New Madrid's a bit far northeast of OK to be in play on this quake.

I agree with Jesse that the "jelly" rolls we get in SoCal from a small quake is fairly fun. It's more like riding a ripple or wave than the jolting and shuddering that some other quake-prone places get. I don't care for jolts much. No sir, I don't like 'em. But between quakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, or ice storms, I'll take quakes, and I much prefer a bunch of little ones to a few big ones.

Don't look at this map if you are firmly convinced that the planet's all stable.

Glad you're ok, dgdave!

I'm only 350ish miles north of you and didn't feel a thing. I didn't even know this took place until now. We must be in separate fault zones.

I was in quake close to the epicenter about that same size here in CA. I was in a Best Buy when the concrete floor did the wave roll thing and everything on the racks were rattling like crazy. Freaky.
