Each step up in magnitude means that the shaking is 10 times stronger (the scale is logarithmic).
A 3.0 will feel like a freight train going by next to you.
A 4.0 will feel like a large truck hitting the building.
A 5.0 is enough to make you jump out of your seat and wonder if you should head for better cover, and then its over. Only very minor damage will occur.
A 6.0 shakes for a while longer, and you will definitely dive for cover. It'll scare the heck out of you until it stops. Old buildings with brick and masonry can collapse. Windows may shatter. Your kitchen cabinets will be a mess. But mostly everything is OK.
A 7.0 knocks you on your ass and you'll try to find cover as your shelves and furniture lurch and leap away from the walls, throwing all the contents onto the floor, you can hear the groan of the building moving and stretching, your large appliances are jumping around, and infrastructure (electricity, gas, water, etc.) will collapse for at least a few days.
An 8.0...
