inside the volcano

Postby Eric O » Sat Dec 04, 2010 12:15 pm

After just under 5 years of operation my volc has been running loud, the casing was heating up more than it should, and the air pump was weak as hell, resulting in suboptimal performance. So I took the cover off and cleaned that shit up.

Before I blew out the dust and debris: (you can see the handwritten Dec. 1 '05 build date on the inside of the cover in the 1st photo)

After blowing the crap out from all over the guts, and running it before I put the cover back on:

It's running like new again. All the troubles are probably a result of debris clogging the intake on the air pump and the pump vibration damper. I would do this on any volcano more than three years old and past the date of warranty expiration (removing the cover voids the warranty). Just be careful when you take off the cover not to put too much pressure on the knob. It is attached to the thermostat, which you don't want to break. The manufacturer cautions against taking the cover off for that reason, but it can be done if you're careful and there is really no other way to refurbish an old one.

In case anyone was wondering, you are correct. I did buy a stainless steel baking sheet from a kitchen supply store just to set my volc on.

Optional disc golfing accessory and how to refurbish it.

I forgot to mention. I didn't do this but next time I would use a can of air to blow the debris out from around the air pump. Probably work better than just turning it upside down and blowing it out with breath, which is what I did.

Mixed Bag- Me too. I might give up my car before my volc.

I don't really think so Roy, but as always mods are free to delete it if they disagree, so I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. I'm just showing some pics of how a mechanical appliance looks on the inside, not starting a discussion of if it's right or wrong or whether anything belongs on the course or doesn't, so I'd appreciate it if everyone would keep it that way.

taking the cover off and blowing the shit out really shows your mechanically prowess.

Dirty - I realize anybody can take a few screws off and pull the cover. The point is most people, including myself, never open it up to look at the guts or perform maintenance cause it voids the warranty and is expressly cautioned against by the manufacturer. I thought the pictures of the inside would be interesting to any other owner, not to mention the knowledge of how to easily bring an old unit back to new working condition. Maybe to impress you I should have posted pics of putting a new clutch plate in my truck instead, except that I never took pics of that because most people who are interested already know what the inside of a transmission looks like. See what I'm sayin...

Bill - I'm not trying to have a discussion about what it's for or anything that might be controversial enough to lock/delete the thread. Thanks.
