Superclass discs and Pro Golfers?

Postby BrotherDave » Fri Feb 11, 2011 11:25 am

I wasn't sure where to post this so here it is.

I was curious as to how many pros keep a Superclass disc or similar lid as part of their regular repertoire. I know a lot of guys like Zephyrs but how many pros or advanced players actually keep one in the bag, even on tourney days?
Some discs of various sizes, weight, plastic and mold.

Matt Dollar (1012-rated Georgia pro) carries a Zephyr.

Schwebbie uses a Sonic. not exactly superclass but close. I always heard that Climo kept either a Sky-Styler or a Sky-Pro in his bag just for freestyle shenanigans.

it's not exactly super class but George Smith always has a Super Puppy or two in his bag.

It's true I've seen him break it out on the course. other NC players can vouch for it too.

also most player setups listed on the sponsor sites are inaccurate or outdated. for instance:
http://www.natedoss.com/NateDoss/My_Bag.html
http://discraft.com/team_doss.html
apparently he uses a wasp and a buzzz and no longer uses the ZXL or the Surge.

I'll see him in a few weeks at VTI. I will confirm your assertion then.

I'm thinking he just forgot to list the Surge, since he still mentions it in the descriptions of the other discs, saying that the Force and Surge are his go-tos for example.

Wait you can use super class discs on for a normal event?? So I could carry a Discraft Ultrastar and just pretend the cage was a person?? I was unware of this. I think if there was no wind at all I could place every shot from 150 in with in 10 feet.

Plus you could have something to play catch with while waiting for people or walking down a fairway.

How about the other way around? I have a hazy recollection about running into using minis to throw being legal for PDGA sanctioned events if they were smaller versions of PDGA approved normal sized discs. Am i wrong? Minis have a higher chance of going through small openings in bushes, woods and what have you. At least Prodiscus Jokeri mini seems to be a smaller scale Jokeri and it ain't bad at short ranges. I haven't thrown it at long ranges i don't want to lose it in the snow.
Flat shots need running on the center line of the tee and planting each step on the center line. Anhyzer needs running from rear right to front left with the plant step hitting the ground to the left of the line you're running on. Hyzer is the mirror of that.

In PDGA competition, minis are markers only and have standards separate from those for normal discs.

PDGA Tech Standards wrote:...approved discs must:
...(3) not be less than 21 cm in outside disc diameter, nor exceed 30 cm in outside disc diameter;

There may a better reason why not but ^this^ was the first that came to mind.
...there was a time when you were taught to find the best disc for you, not the best disc for your situation on the course, which is how they are sold now. IMO, the flight charts are basically there to point out all the stuff you dont have in your bag and why you suck.
