Warning! Problems with the most recent batch of black dye.

Just recently I bought new black dye to replace my dye that got contaminated. I bought a bottle of black and mixed it like normal. Dyed for ~20 minutes and ....nothing. Bought a box of black dye and added it to the dye I already had ready, dyed for 20 more minutes and .....nothing. Left the disc in the dye all day and ......nothing! Bought some dark green, dyed for 20 min. and have a wonderful black with greenish tints. Having heard of this a time or 2 before I mentioned this in the DGCR disc dying threads and promptly got 2 more people who have had the same problem. The one thing that is common to everyone who has had the problem is that instead of the purple undertones this batch of dye has dark rust brown undertones. So beware there is a batch of black dye out there that does NOT work!

Ive had old dye do this. Are you sure the dye wasnt real old.

I bought the dye the same dayI tried to dye the disc. I also bought from the same place I bought my old stuff I had to throw out. Also all the people I've heard from that have had problems (about 10 people now) have had it happen recently with brand new dye.

ive had some bad experiences with black liquid dye, but never from the powder. and i go through a TON of black.

Hence why in my dye tutorial I said not to use the liquid. Sure it works, but I've have issues with it before. The powder was super consistent for me.

I tried both. Neither worked. In this case I think both liquid and powder are affected. I'll look into this aspect more. I did add a box of black to the pan of black liquid and still didn't get any results.

i know the rust brown/purple difference. only time ive seen rust brown was that one bottle of liquid. now that i think of it, that dye had a different consistency too. it was thicker...almost a gel.

An update on this. Rit has admitted on their facebook page that They have changed their formula so that it will no longer dye plastic. The change is in the works. All liquid dyes have been changed and some of the powders have been changed. So now is the time to stock up on old stuff if you want to continue using rit dye. Look for lot numbers that end in 10 or earlier.

Where do you find the lot number on the dye's I was about to do one and realized I'm out of black. I have a stockpile of everything BUT black.

It's stamped on the bottom of the box.

I've got about 7 or 8 boxes of black. Maybe less. I think Black is what I stockpiled.
I'm about to round up all of my dyes, containers and dye related stuff and sell it here on the forums to someone who wants to have a whole kit for one price.

Ok so my local AC Moore doesn't even carry RIT anymore. They carry this other brand called Tulip. It does not work at all. Black dye was a white powder, turned my hands a greenish tint and didn't even touch the plastic.

so tulip=bad. i havent needed an alternate yet but have always wondered about that stuff. thanks for the intel.
