ive been playing for almost 5 years now and somehow ive just heard of the x step. it seems easy enough but ive never tried it at the course yet, how will it improve my game? why is it better than just running straight up? is it a power/weight transfer thing? will it give me more distance? please answer my questions.

It allows your shoulders to rotate properly during the reach-back (turning 180 degrees from your target) which means you'll be able to generate more disc speed at the hit.
It also helps with leverage and the weight shift.Driving Form and Technique

Personally I'd say it helps the hips turn more than it helps the shoulders. It forces you to turn your hips to get your left leg (for RH) to take the backwards step. Then when your right leg comes forward to plant, it opens the hips back up and starts the 'unraveling' of your torso, shoulders, arm and wrist.

Yeah, whipping your arm with the x-step and getting your weight forward will increase your power to throw discs further.
