actual speed

Searched the forum for info on how fast discs actually fly, didn't find. I guess there must be several posts about it. Anyone?

I tried using one of those pistol-like speed meters, and most 300ft-drives were somewhere around 25 m/sec. Don't know how accurate it was.

I've read numbers along the lines of 130 kph (36 m/s) from Pros like Ville Piippo, though I have no doubt that some can manage more than that.

Bradley Walker had some vids posted of launch speeds. He was getting in the 50-60mph range. Avery was launching discs around 75 mph at the Vibram open.

Our club has a radar that we have used to measure launch speeds. Our current record holder is Juho Parviainen (who threw 201m (660') at Big D 8) with 127 kph (79 mph, 35 m/s).

My personal record from last winter was 100 kph (62 mph, 28 m/s), and I can throw somewhat over 400'.

Ok that's interesting. So I guess launch speed would usually be something like this?

Super distance: 32 m/s (71,5 mph / 112 kmh) and above
400' drives: 26-31 m/s (58-69 mph / 92-111 kmh)
300' drives: 21-25 m/s (47-56 mph / 76-91 kmh)

Spin rate will also make a very large difference in distance, but those numbers look right for a good guesstimate.

This depends on the disc, the line you throw, the nose angle, etc..

I think Blake estimated that most people throwing 300' were in the 35-40 MPH range.

Spike is ball parking roughly correct but the 400' requirement is less than that at least. I throw over 400' with s-curves and the fastest freak shot i got into a radar was 94 KPH and according to my high speed camera i'm steady at 21 revolutions per second when i concentrate on squeezing as hard as i can with the wrist still being able to move=not locked to straight which limits my distance to 350'.

Back when i topped out at 300' my camera based measurements suggested that i usually threw at 15 meters per second and topped out at 17 on freak shots. Back then the camera i had took 60 pictures per second so it isn't the most accurate but the results scale fairly well with the 400' speeds i get. When i threw 380' normally and 400' with s-curves tops i got 15 revs per second normally and 17 tops. Those were normal throws not ones with intentional maximum squeeze earlier than with a max drive pull.

Avery was measured to have thrown 72 MPH at the Vibram open. When he threw a control shot at Tali Open 2009 for the dual angle slo mo video at around 500-550' he got 19.7 revs per sec.

Jussi Meresmaa threw a little over 130 KPH and Ville threw faster than Jussi with an overhead shot but i don't recall the exact numbers. Jussi was reported to have said that it ain't possible to beat Ville's score with BH throws. I wasn't present at the event so it is second hand information.

Espen Mökkelgjerd was measured to throw at 30.2 meters per second and he throws 180 m. Teebird for both.
