2012 Worlds: Pros, don't wait. Your spot will be taken May 1

Postby Spinthrift » Fri Apr 20, 2012 6:55 am

This message was posted on the CDGC board by 2012 Worlds TD Sam Nicholson.

"May 1st the PDGA will open up the Worlds registration to all PDGA current members. If you are a invited Pro player, expect to play and have not yet signed up, I recommend that you do so before May 1st. Due to the fact that the Am divisions are mostly, if not completely filled, many Ams will sign up in the Pro divisions to have the opportunity to play in the Worlds at all. I would wager that by May 5th the entire event, all divisions and classifications will fill. If you snooze, you will lose and be a spectator or watch the results at home on the computer."

Yep, it was also a huge crunch at 2011 Pro Worlds, at the end of invite-only registration. Lots of snoozers, and lots of losers, but people didn't always lose when they snoozed...quite a few never registered, showed up the day before, and still got in, passing those on the wait list. It caused quite a stir. Add to that, PDGA had been telling pros all year long that Worlds wouldn't fill, and not to worry about registering during the invite only period!

So certain people didnt register, and played before the people on the waitlist? did they make the waitlist public? that seems wrong in every sense of the word.

Indeed, it was very wrong, the wait-list had been public for a very long time, and many of the people who got jumped were folks that had put huge efforts and investments into the tournament. I don't think PDGA even realizes just how much they f-ed that up, in their news announcement today* they even had the gall to state that it was the "first time ever" that a Worlds might fill shortly after the invite-only period ended.
