ChuckinPutters Bag: 2013 Critique Please

Postby ChuckinPutters » Tue Apr 30, 2013 8:10 pm

Vitals:
Years playing/experience: 3.5 years
Right/left-handed/ambidextrous: right-handed
Throwing Style: RHBH, trying to learn to flick but failing.
Golf Distance (avg/max*) for putter/mid/driver: Ion: 225/250'; Axis/Vector: 265/285'; Volt: 295/320'; Destroyer: 315/365'(very inconsistent)

Age: 15
Sex: M
Injuries/handicaps?: Tore Rotator Cuff last year during baseball season by pitching.
Other sport proficiencies?: Baseball, Basketball, Football
What do you like/dislike about your current bag?: The only thing that I have that is set is my Ion/Anode set up and my Volt. Everything else that I have, I am really uncomfortable throwing with.
Specific areas of desired feedback: Just help with everything. I am willing to start from the ground up.
Immediate and long-term goals: I'd like to have a lot more consistency in the short-term, and it would be nice to learn how to throw farther with each and every one of my discs.

Bag:

Distance Drivers:
174 AJ Star Destroyer -used- main distance
172 Champ Destroyer -new- really OS

Fairway Drivers:
168 Star Teebird -brand spankin new- I dont really know
168 11x Champ Teebird -worn- pretty reliable fade
166 DX Teebird -beat- really flippy/roller
168 Opto River -new- insane glide
174 Neutron Volt -used- main driver used for everything
168 Neutron Amp -new- really understable, cant get used to it.
168 P PD -used- Developing into one of my most consistent disc. I love the feel of PDs
Mids:
172 X Comet -new- lots of glide
172 Proton Vector -used- Supposed to have reliable fade, but its really inconsistent for me.
168 Neutron Axis -new- I like this disc. Can shape any line with it. Starting to become my main mid.
180 12x KC Roc -used- Reliable fade, but I can't seem to get used to the feel of Rocs even though every one suggests them.
166 DX Roc -beat- Really flippy mid.

Putters:
175 Proton Ion -beat- Main driving and Putting putter.
168 Proton Ion -used- This is when I am having a harder time throwing the heavier Ion.
172 Eclipse Proton Anode -used- Insane line shaper. Can put it on any line I want. Becoming my favorite disc in the bag.I just love this thing.

Utility:
172 Z Predator -used- meathook utility

Please help me to build a bag that I can be use to be consistent and competitive with. I can't wait to see what you have to say

Hi. I wouldn't rip hard until the injury has healed properly. A video would help to see if there are form changes that add power and accuracy for you.

There is a huge leap in power requirement from the fairway drivers to the Destroyer. Even a Beast might not outfly the River a lot at your power buy it is more wind tolerant and probably as long or longer than the Destro for you. Pro mid 160s should be fine. It is easier to grip than the Destro and having kess fade and a much lower power requirement than the Destro it will be much more consistent.

You have so many fairway drivers that they overlap and it might lead to picking up a wrong disc. I'm thinking the Teebird is being squeezed hard from both sides of stability by the River and PD. You might be able to do without it. I do. Maybe the Amp is excess too.

The bead in the Roc means you cannot grip it as hard as the drivers to get a clean release. Maybe even a two or three finger grip might clean up the release and the flight. The same goes for the Vector so maybe switching where the fingers are and the pressure on each of them makes those fly better. If they do that is the first time you can begin to see what the bag should be like in the mid department.

You don't have slow overstable discs so maybe a putter would not overlap with the Pred.
Flat shots need running on the center line of the tee and planting each step on the center line. Anhyzer needs running from rear right to front left with the plant step hitting the ground to the left of the line you're running on. Hyzer is the mirror of that.

I've toyed with my bag a bit. How does this look?

Fairway Drivers:
168 Star Teebird -new- slightly OS Bird
168 11x Champ Teebird -seasoned- dead straight. I can also shape quite a few lines with this.
174 Neutron Volt -used- haven't been throwing this too well, but I used to like it so much that I have a hard time dropping it.
168 Neutron Amp -new- I am throwing this really well. I can hyzer flip this pretty far and it has a lot of glide when thrown correctly.
168 P PD -seasoned- Developing into one of my most consistent disc. I love the feel of PDs
168 Star Eagle X -new- Pretty OS for me. But I like it a lot.

Mids:
172 Proton Vector -used- I have been throwing this like it is supposed to lately and it has found itself back into my bag.
168 Neutron Axis -new- Dead straight. It can also be thrown on any line that I want it to.
180 12x KC Roc -seasoned- this is my straight to left fading roc
177 1st Run Champ Roc3 -new- beefy. I love it.

Putters:
175 Proton Ion -beat- Putting Ion
168 Proton Ion -used- For when I'm not feeling the heavy Ion
173 Textured Ion -seasoned- I love the feel of this for driving.
174 Eclipse Proton Anode -seasoned- anny approaches.

Utility:
175 Champ Firebird -used- I went back to Firebirds instead of the Predator, because the Pred wasn't as overstable as I wanted it to be. Plus, Innova is more accessible in my area.

The mids aren't as overlapped aas the drivers but even then you run risk of picking the false mids. Since some of your drivers are still maturing and you're fairly new with some of them maybe it is not the time to start the reduction of molds just yet. When you have more data how each of them flies on different lines you can make an informed decision which ones are the best for you and which ones can be replaced by the rest. I think there are some discs that can be dropped without a loss in able to handle any line but given disc variations and wear it is best for you to find out how they fare for you. PDs as a mold are good wind handlers.

Looks like you have a pretty tidy set up. I can appreciate having so few molds but having every shot in your bag.

What was the determining factor for you switching over from Ions to Aviars?

Pretty simple set up you have going, but workable. I think your bag is too heavy in some categories, you probably only need 2-3 wide-winged drivers at most (including FBs), and probably just 3 fairway drivers (over-stable, stable, and under-stable). Your stable fairway driver should be a money disc that you feel comfortable throwing from the tee the majority of time, and that you can work a lot of lines. Mid-range and great P&A discs are what will save you the most strokes in a round, and help your game the most. Also, Destroyers are great in the hands of a highly skilled disc golfer, but they tend to be squirrely for a developing player...you might consider throwing an over-stable/stable/understable combo of a more reliable golf mold, like the Wraith (since you seem to prefer Innova).
Japan bag...
Drivers: Starlite Wraith (158g), Gummy Champion Leopard (150g), 1st Run Z-Talon (150g)
Mid-Range: Star Classic Roc (146g), R-Pro Roc (157g)
Putt/Approach: Legacy Protege Clozer (158g), Glow DX Aviar (150g)
