In the Distance secrets article, Dave D. says that there should be some space between the index and middle finger when gripping a disc. What does this do?

If you hold your fingers all together, then the disc doesn't align down the crease in your palm. If you have a little space between the first and second finger, then the others sort of fall inline for the grip.
