Alternative Materials to Plastic for Disc

Postby cbongiova » Thu Jun 22, 2006 1:20 am

As far as I know all disc used in disc golf are make from some type of plastic.

Has any manufacturer of disc every tried stronger/lighter materials such as glass fibers or carbon fibers?

And would using such materials be beneficial?

I'm not suggesting making the entire disc out of these materials as this would make the disc a deadly weapon.

I'm envisioning them using it to make the flat part of the disc.

This could allow the rim to have more weight which could be useful.

it's not likely that this would be of great benefit except for overstable discs.

most discs nowadays are already too rim heavy to be really straight flyers for most players.

the other aspect is that carbon fiber and fiberglass would not likely add durability. those materials are great for applications like frames etc were the forces are stress based and require rigidity. I think I have seen some softball bats with fiberglass, but usually carbonfiber doesn't handle impacts with hard objects too well. there are lots of bitter bicycle riders that have dumped their $1500 carbon fiber frame and now have a crack in it.

How would it be beneficial for overstable discs?

How does rim weight effect flight characterstics?
